California Wine Growing in the Summer

Summer in California is warm and clear. Early in the day we may have morning fog, but by late morning, a clear blue sky allows plenty of sunlight for vineyards. If you visit a vineyard during this time, you’ll see rows of leafy canopy.

When June hits, you’ll begin to see grape clusters growing on these vines. The right balance of sunlight and cool evenings allow the grapes to grow to the perfect balance needed for wine. They ripen in the warm sunlight, and keep their acidity when it’s cool.

By the start of August, grapes take on color and begin to soften. This onset is called “veraison”, a cue for wineries to start preparing for the harvest season.
